Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data (BIFOLD) pools AI expertise
Everyone is talking about artificial intelligence. Hundreds of scientists are researching on AI in and around Technical University of Berlin today. A variety of institutes and initiatives is the result of the digital agenda launched by the city of Berlin in 2015 to strengthen AI research competences. Manifestations of this digital strategy were set through the Berlin Big Data Center and the Einstein Centre Digital Future (ECDF) leading towards the Berlin Center for Machine Learning as well as the Science of Intelligence excellence cluster. Last year also saw the establishment of the Werner-von-Siemens Centre for Industry and Science (see R&E Newsletter 1/20), a joint effort from Siemens, TU Berlin and other players to utilize technologies such as AI but also AM for the future of production.
In order not to make the mistake of considering the two key aspects of AI – Big Data and Machine Learning - separately, two AI competence centers - the Berlin Big Data Center (BBDC) and the Berlin Center for Machine Learning (BZML) – have now been merged to create the Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data (BIFOLD).
In the course of their work the BIFOLD research groups will pursue major challenges within AI, like Foundations & methods, Management of data science processes and systems, Architecture and technologies, Responsible AI as well as Systems & tools for novel applications.
BIFOLD will collaborate with already existing initiatives and institutes and contribute to the digital ecosystem in Berlin.
